Climate Change Causes Record Temperature in Antarctica

Scientists are sounding the alarm after Antarctica recorded its highest-ever temperature, a staggering 18.3 degrees Celsius (64.9 degrees Fahrenheit), on February 6, 2023.

This unprecedented heatwave has sparked concerns about the devastating effects of climate change on the fragile polar region.

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the temperature spike occurred at the Concordia research station, located on the high Antarctic Plateau. This remote area is typically characterized by frigid temperatures, with an average of -51 degrees Celsius (-60 degrees Fahrenheit) in February.

The extreme heatwave is attributed to a combination of factors, including a strong atmospheric ridge and an unusually warm air mass. Scientists believe that human-induced climate change is a major contributor to these unusual weather patterns.
